Samsung SP-F10M LED Projector

While we're still waiting to get our hands on an LED projector deigned for home cinema use, we're always keeping an eye out for other types of product that use this technology. Today, we've spotted the Samsung SP-F10M.

The Samsung SP-F10M projector is an alternative-light-source projector designed for professional use, competing with the likes of Casio's LED and laser projectors. The lamp's brightness of 1,000 lumens looks a little tight for use in Data mode, although it would be perfectly sufficient for home cinema use so long as you can get the room pitch black.

Why the lower resolution?

Resolution is a little on the low side in the SP-F10M. It's announced as XGA, which is 1024 x 768 pixels, falling just under the lowest HD resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. Why? Well, I'm only guessing, but it could be because of the brightness. Products designed for business generally seek to maximise brightness while being less picky about the black. It's therefore possible that these lower-resolution panels let though more light than home cinema chips, allowing the projector to reach the 1,000 lumens announced. Like I said though, that's just one potential explanation.

Why not test it?

We asked Samsung if we could borrow an SP-F10M to test, as it would be the first LED projector to enter our product survey. Anyway, let's just say we won't be holding our breath. Plus, as this product is primarily intended for business use, its video playback capabilities are almost certainly not up to the same standard as those of a specifically designed home cinema projector. You never know though, we could always be pleasantly surprised!
