The Samsung Galaxy S II looks set to smash through the records set by its predecessor. In fact, Samsung's star smartphone is happily gaining ground before the arrival of the iPhone 5 due later this year.

There's no stopping the Galaxy S II. After having sold over 3 million handsets in just 55 days, Samsung is now reporting sales of over 6 million Galaxy S II mobiles in less than three months.

With US release scheduled for this summer, the Galaxy S II could well top 10 million handset sales before the end of the year. It could even outstrip the original Galaxy S, which clocked up approximately 14 million sales in less than a year.

With its 4.3-inch screen, Samsung's top-of-the-range smartphone hasn't seen too much competition in its particular niche, with just the HTC Sensation, Motrola Atrix, Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc and LG Optimus 2X for company. The Galaxy S II has a huge head-start on the iPhone 5, apparently lined up for release in September. Plus, with its price on contract starting to come down, its success shows no sign of stalling just yet.
