Just like their higher-end counterparts, expert compacts are subject to regular firmware updates. Samsung has now released an update for its flagship compact, the Samsung EX1.

The firmware update for the Samsung EX1 goes by the catchy name of 006291. Note that the TL500—the same model sold under a different name in some countries—requires a different firmware, known as 006254.

There are no major improvements in store, but the update does correct a bug with direct start-up in playback mode and tweaks the stabilisation system slightly. We really liked the Samsung EX1 but, unfortunately, this firmware update won't improve the few little problems we picked up in our product test—such as the manual focusing controls or the lack of customisation options—flaws which Samsung should, technically, be able to correct with a simple software update.

The update process is standard stuff. First, download the firmware (Samsung will ask you to enter your personal details and the serial number of your EX1) from this page. As the file is a .zip, it's compatible with all operating systems. Once you unzip the download, copy the five resulting files onto a blank SD card. Then, charge the camera battery fully, insert the SD card, and switch on the camera. Next, it should automatically ask if you want to start the update. Press the shutter release button to accept.
