Samsung used the IFA trade show a few weeks ago to unveil details of its new 830 Series SSD drives, available with 64 GB, 128 GB, 256 GB or 512 GB of storage space. The spec promises incredibly fast data transfer rates via a SATA III interface.
It's just one of the first of a new breed of SSD devices that use SATA III. Samsung, which never likes to get left behind, is already working on the 830 Series as a replacement for the earlier 470 Series derives which used ARM processors as memory controllers and a 256 MB cache.
The transfer rates that Samsung claims to be offering are absolutely incredible. According to the spec, the new drives should all be able to offer read speeds of up to 520 MB/s. Write speeds will vary based on the overall size, starting at 160 MB/s for the 64 GB version, before rising to 320 MB/s for the 128 GB and 256 GB drives and finally 400 MB/s for both the 256 GB and 514 GB models.
It will come with a free copy of Norton Ghost software and a 3.5'' drive bay allowing customers to slide it into their PC. Alternatively, a SATA-to-USB adaptor will allow use with a laptop.
