Samsung has become the worldwide number one smartphone vendor. Apple is in second and Nokia third.

In the third quarter of 2011, according to Strategy Analytics, Samsung shipped 27.8 million smartphones, which makes it number one on the worldwide market. Apple, which sold 17.1 million iPhones in the same period is in second place and Nokia is third with 16.8 million units sold.

Samsung has, according to the report, 'shown, at least in the short term, that it is possible to differentiate while running on the Android ecosystem'. In the short term indeed as the worldwide leader in consumer electronics has been growing incredibly fast in the smartphone sector.

Surfing on the wave of the success of the Galaxy S and Galaxy S II, Samsung has more than achieved its objectives. Apple has, then, been knocked off top spot, selling fewer phones last quarter than in the previous quarter, apparently because potential clients were waiting for the successor to the iPhone 4 to be released.

In difficulty for the last few months, Nokia could make up some ground in the months to come with the arrival of its new Windows Phones (Lumia 710 and Lumia 800).

In this ever changing market, the cards are still being dealt and played and HTC has just stolen top spot from Samsung in the United States, while Sony, for its part, has just purchased Ericsson with the obvious intention to occupy the fertile ground of smartphone sales and integrate them as part of its global strategy.
