Readers Write: Why Only Bagless Vacuum Cleaners?

Bagless vacuum cleaners are all very well and good, but they're not for everyone. A DigitalVersus reader contacted us asking when we planned to start testing bagged models.
Unfortunately, Miele hasn't responded to any of our requests ... which is fine ... it's a free world after all. We've talked to the boss on the phone, we've schmoozed with their press people, we've sent e-mail after e-mail but still, no sign of the vac.
None of our regular arm-bending tactics seem to have worked. Even if we tell them how many readers have already looked at our product survey, even when we explain who we are and what we do, even if we assure them that online magazines can be just as credible as their paper-based counterparts, it looks like we're just not good enough for Miele's vacuum cleaners. So it's certainly not for want of trying that there aren't any Miele vacs in our product survey!
Anyway, it looks like we'll have to scale down our aspirations and choose a different bagged vacuum cleaner for our reference model. I'm on the case.

Hello,
I'm a regular reader of your product tests, which have helped me pick products for myself as well as advise friends and family.
I'm loving the fact that you've now also started covering geeky home appliances like robotic vacuum cleaners.
However, I've only ever used bagged vacuum cleaners. So comparing one bagless model with another is all very well, but it's not that informative for bagless novices like me.
I think it would be useful to have at least ONE bagged model in your product survey to use as a kind of reference to compare the bagless models against. A mid-range model for around £100 with a HEPA filter would be perfect (otherwise there wouldn't be much to compare it with in the face-off) [...]
This would really help people like me make more sense of your test results, as we could compare efficiency, price, noise etc. more effectively.
Keep up the good work!

Bagged models will be coming soon, I promise! We wanted to start off with bagless models as we were keen to launch ourselves head-first into the Dyson debate. Are their vacs really that good? We were on a mission to find out.
Apart from that, the real reason is that from day one, we've been asking for a bagged model for use as a reference product as you suggest. We didn't want just any old bagged vacuum cleaner though, oh no! We had our hearts set on the latest Miele ultra-high-tech hybrid model.
