Advanced Alarm Clock

Rather than using the basic alarm function already available in iOS, XtremeMac has developed its own alarm clock application.

As well as a large choice of graphic themes, this allows you to set two different alarms, which can in turn be programmed for one specific occasion or to go off regularly, every morning for example.

You can also choose a playlist to wake up to and the amount of time the alarm lets you snooze before going off again. Plus, with the handy Night function, you can program the system to play music for a certain amount of time then switch off automatically.

Although it's technically still a separate company, XtremeMac is a bit like the Apple accessories division of multi-national technology corp Imation. Although some of Imation's other acquired brands, such as TDK and Memorex, also make Apple-compatible accessories, XtremeMac stands out from the crowd with its specialist product range and original designs, as seen in the 3-in-1 Microdock.

Design & Handling: iPod dock and alarm clock

While high-end, feature-packed speaker docks can end up costing as much as a whole new hi-fi system, the 3-in-1 Microdock keeps things simple, practical and doesn't claim to do anything more.

The Microdock is a ridiculously small product that's very easy to use, playing more on its compact design than top-of-the-range features or performances. However, with its functional alarm system and Snooze button for those difficult mornings, it's hard to criticize a product that does exactly what it says on the box, and does it well.

In fact, the only real drawback is that the dock can't run on batteries—it has to be connected to the mains at all times, which means it'll be confined to your desk or bedside table.

Audio: no surprises here

Obviously, we couldn't expect mind-blowing audio quality from a dock this small—the speakers measure just three centimetres across. That said, XtremeMac has still managed to ensure stereo sound.

The dock is actually quite pleasant to listen to. The output is powerful enough to wake you up, and the speakers and chassis aren't out of their depth at high volume settings. There's no saturation, no vibration and no buzzing or humming.

There's pretty much no bass at all and the quality of the audio output is debatable. However, it'd be very difficult to do much better in these conditions, and it's impressive enough that XtremeMac managed to pack all those components into the dock in the first place.

With its good alarm clock function, the 3-in-1 Microdock holds its own as an excellent dock/alarm clock. It's hard to find fault with the product when taken at face value, apart from the fact that it can't run on a battery. The price could put some people off (RRP £60), but we think it's worth every penny.
