Photokina: Olympus' Mystery Camera

During the Photokina show last week, Olympus unveiled a mysterious new compact camera, much like it did two years ago when an otherwise anonymous SLR went on to become the first E-30 and the very first prototype for its Pen range.

The camera was on show in a glass case, and looks like an expert-level compact camera, with a hot-shoe flash/viewfinder mount similar to the one found on its Pen E-P2 and E-PL1 cameras.  However, it's much thinner than a Pen and as there's no button to remove the lens, we're assuming that it can't be swapped for another.

The fact that such a compact camera also claims to be able to zoom suggests it will rely on a small sensor.

The ring we saw around the lens could indicate the use of a control system similar to the one used by the Canon S95.  We hope that's what it's for, anyway, and not just a mount for other optical equipment.

We couldn't find out anything else, but we're hoping to learn more soon.
