While Gartner and IDC published initial provisions for computer sales by brand back in July, IHS has now published data on market share by manufacturer for the second quarter of 2011.

According to the IHS report, Lenovo has overtaken Acer for global PC sales and Asus is now selling more computers than Toshiba. So while one Taiwanese manufacturer has been outstripped by a Chinese computer firm, a second Taiwanese tech company has moved ahead of a Japanese giant!

The graph below shows the number of personal computers (in millions) sold worldwide by each manufacturer in the second quarter of 2011.

The graph shows that Apple is in seventh position overall. However, with consumer habits and product use evolving, devices like tablets and smartphones are now starting to replace the classic laptop or desktop computer for all kinds of day-to-day tasks. Note, then, that over the same period, Apple also shipped 4.7 million iPad tablets and 18.65 million iPhone handsets.
