We only finished testing it yesterday, but Panasonic already has encouraging news about its VT20 plasma 3D TV: sales are going so well in the US that it has increased production by 30%.

The firm's head of TV production, Hirotoshi Uehara, was pleased with the 'strong reaction' and said that plants are now working at 'full capacity, but we've increased 3D panel production by 30 per cent compared to our original plan'.

Definitive pricing for the UK is hard to come by, with many retailers quoting prices above £2000 and other dealers reporting supply problems.  In the US, though, the VT20 sells for a good $400 less than its main rival, the Samsung UEC7700.

A report in the Financial Times sees the increased production as a positive sign that all of the hype surrounding 3D TV will actually pay off in terms of profits for Panasonic.

3D YouTube?

Uehara also suggested that the Internet connectivity offered by most modern TVs could be a way around the lack of 3D broadcasts in most countries, suggesting that a '3D YouTube' could be the real driving force for adoption of 3D TVs, saying 'recently more people are watching television via the internet, and that is unlimited, so I think there is a chance that the breakthrough for 3D will be via internet TV.'
