A touchscreen is no longer enough to make a classic compact stand out from the crowd, so Panasonic has decided to add a Wi-Fi function to the new FX90—the latest in a long line of stylish compact cameras.

Take an FX77, add a Wi-Fi connection and—hey presto—you get the Lumix FX90.

That's basically all Panasonic has done to come up with this new compact, as the FX90 has the same 24-120 mm lens and 12-Megapixel high-speed CCD (with Full HD video) as the previous model. However, the touchscreen has been upped in size to 3.5" and in definition to 460,000 dots—which is worthy of a higher-end compact.

Wi-Fi connectivity brings functions for direct uploading to Facebook, Flickr, Picasa and YouTube. However, it remains to be seen just how practical the interface is in this connected Panasonic snapper, particularly for entering WPA passwords, as this has been a real downside in all the Wi-Fi compacts we've tested so far.

One slightly more original feature of the FX90 is Panasonic's free 'Lumix Link' application, available for iOS and Android, which allows you to control your camera with a smartphone via Wi-Fi, as well as transfer and publish photos online via a 3G network.

The FX90 is due for release in October with UK pricing still to be confirmed.
