Only in Tokyo, Part 7: Toshiba LED TV backlighting demo

Yodobashi, the local megastore style, but bigger, has quite a nice in-store demo on for shoppers. Toshiba has decided to take apart one of its latest LED TVs equipped with backlighting in the form of a mass of diodes. Two models have been set up, one beside the other, the standard set on the right and the one with backlighting exposed on the left.
Both are running the same thing at the same time, which means you can see the LED activity in real time and clock the advantage of having variable intensity backlighting rather than going for a display that you can't alter (CCFL, Edge LED).
Its practicality is obvious: to get your blacks, all you need to do is turn off the diodes (on the left)! And this will give you a better overall contrast to normal. Now you've understood the principle, check out the video below - even better in practice, isn't it (though obviously the definition of our film could've been better!)?
