Only in Tokyo, Part 6: Old Akihabara

The image of modern-day Akihabara is huge skyscrapers dedicated to modern technology.


But before any of them arrived, Akihabara was more of a local market.  But instead of going there to pick up fresh fruit and veg, the locals used it to shop for electronic products, components and accessories.  The old Akihabara is still there if you look closely enough, and is holding out for the time being.  Here's one little corner, squeezed in between two towers but looking for all the world like it hasn't changed since the 80s:


This is the main route through it, and the low ceiling isn't the only surprising part.  Even narrower passages run off to each side.


And if you can read the signs in Japanese, then this video should give you even more of an idea what it's like ...
