For some of you, the name X2 may bring back memories of a certain Sony-Ericsson smartphone that Vodafone dropped like a hot potato. Well, now Nokia looks like it's recycling the name with a brand new music-oriented mobile.

Although probably intended to replace the Xperia X1, the Sony-Ericsson X2 was never released in the UK in the end after being dropped by its carrier network Vodafone. After skipping versions 3 to 9, Sony Ericsson has returned to see greater success with the X10.

Nokia, on the other hand, has been busy filling in the gaps in the X series with the X3 and X6, two music-oriented mobiles, one with a slide-out numeric keypad (X3), and the other with a touch-screen interface and a 32 GB internal memory (X6).

Nokia has now announced the forthcoming release of the new X2, a candybar mobile with integrated music playback controls on the side of the phone. There's also a 5-Megapixel camera but no 3G connectivity.

However, the lack of 3G does help boost battery life, as the X2 can last for 26 days on standby, 27 hours in audio playback mode and offers 13 hours of talk-time. Plus, it weighs just 80g.

The X2 is clearly designed for younger users, and its main attraction has got to be its price. Nokia says it'll be available for an estimated retail price of €85 (£75) before taxes and subsidies, although official UK pricing has yet to be confirmed.

The X2 should be available worldwide sometime before the end of June.
