Showing photos to your friends can sometimes be a headache: unless you keep video and USB cables on you all the time, you often have to use the built-in screen on your camera. The Nikon CoolPix S1000pj has a solution: a built-in video projector.

As a camera, the S1000pj has a similar spec to the S70: 12 Megapixel sensor and periscopic 28-140 mm zoom with, let’s say, limited brightness. There is no touch screen however: here you have a standard 2.7 inch LCD screen with 230,000 pixels.

The projector, more or less well integrated in the middle of the camera (some like it, others don’t), allows you to display images on a wall or sheet of paper; the S1000pj comes with a remote to direct your slide-shows at a distance.

The projector has VGA definition which is a little low for a display that can extend to a diagonal measuring 1 metre (projection distance 2 m). Nevertheless the main limitations are the power (10 lumens, which is 100 times less powerful than the low-end of home cinema projectors) and contast: 30:1. It is reminiscent of LcoS technology pocket projectors such as the Aiptek Pocket Cinema, whose inability to display a visible image in a room that isn’t completely dark has been noted.

Is this an unimportant gadget with limited technology or a real step forward for the point-and-shoot? Only the future can say. The S1000pj has in any case the merit of introducing an innovation that will no doubt go down well at parties!
