Is Nokia a genuinely green manufacturer? Do they go beyond just marketing? According to the latest survey of high-tech products by Greenpeace, they are the best high-tech manufacturer. When Greenpeace's assessment of environmentally-friendly technology was first launched back in December 2006, Nokia took the lead, only to fall behind thanks to problems with its take-back program in India
This time, though, the mobile phone giant has gained a substantial lead, receiving 7 out of 10 thanks largely to its much better efforts at accepting old unwanted products for recycling.
Greenpeace also highlighted the number of Nokia plants running on renewable energy, the low percentage of toxic products in its mobile phones and the power consumption of its chargers, which is particularly low when they're plugged in but not in use, which is not something that is true of all chargers.
After Nokia, a whole bunch of manufacturers float around 5 out of 10, including Samsung, Fujitsu-Siemens, Sony-Ericsson and Sony. Fujitsu-Siemens too have seen a reversal of fate, improving on their earlier very poor score thanks to a determined effort to remove polluting products from their equipment.
