Pioneer demonstrates 500 GB Blu-ray disc

It's definitely not ready to hit the stores just yet, but Pioneer Europe has just announced that it is now possible to manufacture BluRay discs that store up to 500 GB as an idea of what what might be available in the next four years.

This technical achievement - a record, in fact - shows that Pioneer is willing to put its weight behind this format despite suggestions that DVDs will succomb to downloads and SSD media.

The new disc relies on twenty layers of 25 GB each, as opposed to two 4 GB layers on currently available DVDs.
