New Logitech M705 mouse claims three years of battery life

The biggest factor holding wireless mice back is their energy consumption and its consequence on battery life.  Logitech has made some good progress in this field: its new M705 claims it can go for up to three years.  Another feature that we're glad to see is the scroll wheel, which can either spin freely or click round depending on your choice.

At first sight, the new M705 seems to be a replacement for the MX610, with a change in colour from white to black.  The USB receiver is now tiny, and doesn't stick out of the computer and is part of Logitech's new Unifying system, meaning only one receiver is needed for the manufacturer's latest keyboards and mice.  In exchange for the new scroll wheel, two buttons, that we didn't really use, for accessing e-mail and zooming, have been removed.  It's a step in the right direction.  The sensor still uses laser technology, meaning it'll work on any surface without a mouse mat, unless it's highly reflective.

Update: Logitech has just been in touch to say that the M705 is actually a replacement for the VX Revolution.  That's a useful piece of information as you should get a Revolution as soon as you can!  It's almost half the price and has an extra feature under the thumb too …
