Our opinion on the new generation netbooks this week, with 2 products that are high-end for the segment. The frontier with the world of ultra-portables is disappearing, while prices remain reasonable; so much the better for buyers.

HP has based its Pavilion dm1 on the Compaq Mini 311c, souping it up somewhat. It has 3 GB of RAM and a dual-core processor. The ION chipset falls by the wayside however, meaning it loses out on 3D performance.

MSI has gone for an AMD solution on its machine. This is a change from the Atom or CULV platforms that we see so often. In spite of higher processor consumption, the MSI surprised us in terms of battery life, making it a very worthwhile choice. Especially as it’s very reasonably priced.
