A new version of the Droid X smartphone is due to launch in the US on the Verizon network at the end of May.

Motorola's much rumoured new smartphone has now been given an official release date of 26 May in the US. The phone will sell for $200 with a contract and has tech specs that are quite similar to the Motorola Atrix, which was released this month in the UK on Orange (stay tuned for our review coming in a few weeks' time).

Droid X2

The Droid X2 has a 4.3-inch screen with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels and an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor clocked at 1 GHz. It runs on Android 2.2 but is compatible with version 2.3 (Gingerbread). It boasts Bluetooth, Wi-Fi 802.11 (b/g/n), a USB 2.0 port, a micro SD card slot, an 8 GB internal memory and an HDMI 1.4 output.
This new Droid also has an 8-Megapixel camera with dual-LED Flash and films 720p HD video at 30 frames per second. It can, however, play 1080p Full HD videos.
