Monitor Reviews: Bargain LG W2240S and Philips 231T1 with Freeview HD

Philips 231T1

Our monitor reviews this week include a hybrid TV-monitor, giving Philips a chance to have a go at dethroning our favourite, the Samsung P2370HD.

It shared our lab bench with a much more ordinary monitor: far from being a top-quality professional monitor with a price to match, this affordable offering from LG is perfect for less demanding users who want a monitor for checking their e-mail or browsing the web.

Back in March, we tested the Philips 221T1, a hybrid TV-monitor that didn't leave a very strong impression.  Now it's the turn of the 23'' version of the same range to pay a visit to our lab.  Although there are only a few differences between the two models, we hope that the three month interval will have allowed Philips to iron out the problems we found on the 221T1.

Like the Philips 225B2C, the LG Flatron W2240S is a monitor designed for people who don't want to do anything more demanding with their computer then checking their e-mail, writing a few letters and browsing the web.  They don't need the most advanced monitor available, or the most recent graphics card for that matter.
