South Korean manufacturer Samsung recorded record sales in Q4, largely thanks to its mobile phone division. However, the firm's net profits are down on 2010.

With around 35 million smartphones sold during the last three months of 2011, Samsung isn't too far behind Apple, which clocked up 37 million iPhone sales over the same period. Over the whole of 2011, however, Samsung was the world's number one smartphone seller.

In Q4 2011, Samsung's mobile division saw profits rise 79% (€1.79 billion) on 2010 and sales grow 52% (€12.10 billion).

A Good Year

All in all, 2011 was a pretty good year for Samsung Telecoms, which saw better results than any of the firm's other divisions (TVs and semi-conductors). Telecoms revenues reached €37.9 billion (a third of total revenues), turning a profit of €5.31 billion (+90% on 2010).

Samsung has broken a personal record by boosting its revenues by over 6% to reach €112 billion in 2011. However, net profits for Samsung Electronics have dropped, falling from €16 billion in 2010 to €13 billion in 2011, which equates to a 17% slide.
