N8 With Symbian Anna

The N8 is equipped with all the connectivity (3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS) you'll need to get the best out of its connected features. We found that the N8 kept good network reception too.
There's nothing to report when it comes to calls—the sound is clear and voices are distinct with no crackling or interference. For speaker-phone as with music, the loud-speakers are are only just OK, especially with the volume set high.
The N8 offers access to several email accounts including Exchange, Ovi, Gmail and Yahoo! and generally handles e-mails well.

Just a few months after releasing its flagship multimedia mobile of 2010, Nokia has released a new and very pink version of the N8. Although there have been a few tiny physical changes, the pink N8 has exactly the same tech specs as the original N8. However, our test model came loaded with Symbian Anna, the updated version of Nokia's mobile OS that's due for release this summer. Let's take a look at what Symbian Anna brings to Nokia's handset.
Although Anna is essentially a fairly minor update to the Symbian OS, it does, slowly but surely, bring Symbian a little closer the other popular mobile operating systems of 2011.

In this pink version, the Nokia logo is engraved in the casing rather than printed on.
A major Symbian update known as 'Belle' is due for release in the latter half of 2011 and will bring, among other things, a notification bar for fast access to certain features. In the meantime, however, Nokia has released the more minor Anna update, which brings a few small new features to the interface.
Note that the pink N8 won't come pre-loaded with this new version of the OS and you'll have to wait until Anna is released towards the end of the summer to update your phone (Nokia C7, N8 and E7) via the Ovi Suite. What's more, our tests were carried out with a developers' version of Anna rather than the final version, so some things could still be set to change or to improve before the final update goes live.

New rounded and slightly redesigned icons.
App developers just need to make sure they stick to the same style, otherwise users will end up with a patchwork of all different kinds of icons scattered across the screen.
With newly designed icons, a browser that's supposedly twice as fast, a full keyboard in portrait mode for SMS, smoother operation, messages displayed as conversations and an improved calendar, Anna (aka PR2) brings a few small changes to the Symbian interface. We'll be looking at all these new features and more in the photos below and the video above. All in all though, Anna does improve some features in the phone's interface, but it still can't match the smoothness or the simplicity of an iPhone, or the customisation options seen in Android handsets with the Sense (HTC) or TouchWiz (Samsung) interfaces. Apart from that, the new N8 Anna phone has a decent set of tech specs and a good battery life.

Announced as a major new feature, Symbian Anna now lets users flick smoothly and seamlessly between several homescreen pages. It's certainly an improvement on previous versions of Symbian, but competitor models (Apple, Android) have been doing that for several years already.

The N8 'only' offers three customisable homescreen pages, while other smartphones now have five or more.

You can now use a full virtual keyboard in portrait mode, replacing the old-school alphanumeric keypad (although this can be recovered if necessary).
The keys are quite close together, but we didn't find ourselves making too many typos. For languages that use accents there are no dedicated keys, so you'll have to use the more time-consuming selection window as seen in the photo above.

Compared to the first N8 we tested, the Anna version does load up web pages a little bit quicker. However, there does seem to be an excessive default zoom in the browser. There's also a visible chequerboard effect (see video) when you zoom out again. Plus, zooming could certainly be smoother.

The calendar and diary function was already pretty effective, but this has been further improved in Anna to make it clearer and simpler. The screen is split into to parts and the event-entry system is more user-friendly.

Nokia N8 Pink
Pluses
-
Good finish, design and handling
-
Takes very good photos with plenty of editing options
-
Audio and video quality
-
Phone and GPS: good network reception / free maps
-
FM radio and translitter, voice recorder, plenty of connections (HDMI)
Minuses
-
Screen: poor colour fidelity
-
Symbian Anna interface: better but still quite convoluted
-
The OS could be more responsive and smooth
The N8 is great for multimedia, especially for taking photos. Although it has plenty of features and handy functions, the interface is still rather convoluted and isn't that easy to get the hang of. With the Anna update, Symbian has been slightly rejuvenated but it's still no real rival for the leading OS of the moment. The Nokia N8 has no doubt arrived a little late in a market that's already jam-packed with fast, smooth and user-friendly smartphones.
