The HTC One hasn't even started shipping yet and already it's causing a stir. HTC has an even newer phone in the works that was not presented in Barcelona, but the One is the phone getting all the attention. "It is a device that has been years in the making and is one of which we are incredibly proud," said Benjamin Ho, Chief Marketing Officer for HTC, upon accepting the award.

So, why did it win? Innovation. What made the difference were the design, the user interface and the handset's technological capabilities, with extra kudos going to HTC's Zoe camera mode.

The jury made up of analysts and journalists also gave special mention to LG, Sony and Huawei for their smartphones. Read: we'd like to hand out some awards, but could we do it without ruffling any feathers?

Samsung won the award for best smartphone of 2012 for its Galaxy S3. The award for Best Tablet went to Sony for the Xperia Tablet Z and its Full HD display. The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 also received mention for its S-Pen interface.

As for Google, it won the Best Tablet of 2012 award for the Nexus 7, which, according to the jury, helped popularise the 7-inch form factor.

Apple, who deserted MWC years ago—only to be followed by Microsoft and Google—didn't win any prizes. Samsung is the one that won Device Manufacturer of the Year. Nokia won Best Feature or Entry Level Phone for the Asha 305, but didn't get anything for its Windows Phones. Hmm....
