A spokesman for Korean manufacturer LG has confirmed that it is planning to release an Android smartphone using Intel's new processor architecture, the Medfield.

LG is getting very excited, even about this rather speculative announcement.  Intel's new Medfield processor for smartphones and  tablets was first unveiled at the Intel Developer Forum, and the Korea Times claims that there will be more news at the upcoming CES trade show in Las Vegas.

The partnership between LG and Intel has not yet been officially confirmed, but it would be the American firm's first step into the smartphone worlds and something of a coup for the Korean company, which is struggling to make a name for itself in this difficult segment.

The mini Medfield processor, engineered at 32 nm on an x86 architecture, and is billed as a direct competitor to the latest Tegra 3 chip from Nvidia on key battlegrounds like battery life.

Intel has already hyped the performance of the Medfield processor:

LG's spokesman suggested that its future smartphone would run Android, without identifying whether it would be Gingerbread or Ice Cream Sandwich, or mentioning anything else about the hardware or the look and feel of the design.

We'll be at CES, of course, starting on January 10, and hopefully we'll be able to tell you more about the new processor architecture and the phones it will be found in.
