French newspaper Le Figaro is reporting that Google's latest Nexus 4 smartphone, built in partnership with LG, is due to launch in the US on 29 October—the same day as Windows Phone 8! The phone is then apparently due to hit France in December.
As the name suggests, the Nexus 4 is Google's fourth smartphone, following on from the Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus (both made by Samsung) and the Nexus One (HTC).
According to leaks picked up by MoDaCo, the Nexus 4 will apparently be quite similar to LG's Optimus G—a high-end smartphone with a 4.7" IPS screen (1280 x 768 pixels) and the new must-have power-packed processor, the 1.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm S4 Pro.
However, the components in the Google phone will apparently be pared down compared with LG's monster. The Nexus 4 is tipped to use a standard S4 processor rather than the S4 Pro CPU seen in the Optimus G (S4 processors will notably be equipping five upcoming Windows Phone 8 mobiles). It's also said to have an 8-Megapixel camera (as spotted in some sneaky screenshots) compared with 13 Megapixels for the Optimus G. However, the Nexus 4 is likely to make up for this with extra functions, such as wireless charging and the very latest versions of Android (it's currently said to be on version 4.2).
A few benchmark test have already started cropping up online. These initial results place the Nexus 4 and its Qualcomm S4 processor behind the HTC One X, which runs on an Nvidia Tegra 3. It was outdone on processing power and 3D processing according to benchmarks run by AnTuTu and Quadrant. However, the version they tested was no doubt still a prototype. There's still time for it to evolve.
Finally, it's interesting to note that the Nexus 4's cheeky 29 October launch date coincides with the outing of the first five Windows Phone 8 mobiles from HTC, Nokia and Samsung. LG isn't on the list.
