With a 4" screen, a token internal memory (but a microSD card slot), an 8-Megapixel camera, a nice design, a choice of colours and a relatively restrained price tag, broad appeal is the name of the game with the HTC 8S on Windows Phone 8.
Alongside the top-of-the-range 8X, HTC has also presented a mid-range Windows 8 handset by the name of the 8S. The HTC 8S is effectively a scaled-down version of the top-end model that's aiming for broader appeal lower down the market. It has a 4" screen but there's no sign of HD resolution—the 8S has a 800 x 480 pixel definition worthy of the Windows Phone 7 era. However, the display does have a Gorilla Glass coating.
On the inside, you'll find a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor clocked at 1 GHz and 512 MB of RAM. So while Windows Phone 7.5 ran like clockwork with just 512 MB of RAM, it'll be interesting to see whether that's still the case with Windows Phone 8.
There's only 4 GB of internal memory in this phone, but the 8S has a microSD memory card slot for boosting storage. The 8S has the same main camera as the 8X, with a 28 mm wide-angle setting, an 8-Megapixel backlit sensor and an LED flash. There's also a 2.1-Megapixel front-facing webcam.
The design is a little more original than that of the higher-end 8X, with an interesting two-tone colour scheme (black and white, grey and yellow, blues, reds, etc.). This look could help the HTC 8S catch the eye of younger users in particular.
The HTC 8S is due to launch alongside the 8X in November 2012.
