Gearing up to compete with Nvidia, Qualcomm, Samsung and Texas Instruments in the mobile processor market, Intel has been showing off the first smartphone to come loaded with its new Atom Medfield Z2460 processor at CES 2012. Say hello to the Lenovo K800.
With its outsized dimensions and casing that's not quite as stylish as the latest smartphone releases, the K800 seems to be a work in progress when it comes to design. However, Lenovo has made some pretty sleek changes to Android 2.3.
In fact, Lenovo has pasted a new interface over Android, with a kind of panel-based layout with a pane for each main function (pictures, videos, social networks, web etc.). In some ways, the interface actually feels quite similar to MeeGo, Intel's OS.
The K800 is certainly an imposing handset, with a 4.5-inch screen and a casing that's not the slimmest we've ever seen. At 1280 x 720 pixels, the screen has a similar resolution to the Google Galaxy Nexus, although Lenovo's handset doesn't use an AMOLED display. Note that this smartphone has an 8-Megapixel photo and video camera.
Demonstrations of the phone in action on Intel's stand were mainly intended to show off the power of the processor, which is apparently 'only' a single-core CPU compared with competitors' three- or four-core models.
With effective video streaming, 1080p HD video playback and internal navigation with no lags or glitches, this Medfield processor looks like it could shape up to be a heavyweight competitor.
