Even though the first PadFone hasn't been out that long, Asus is already gearing up to present a replacement on 16 October in Milan. We'll be heading over there to check it out.
The PadFone is more than a mobile—it's a whole concept. Basically, it's an Android smartphone that can be slotted into a 10.1" tablet, which can in turn be connected to a keyboard-dock for instant transformation into a touchscreen Android netbook. Each bit brings extra connections and batteries.
According to the first rumoured leaks picked up by Italian journalists, the PadFone 2 (note that the photo above is the first PadFone) is tipped to have a 4.7" AMOLED screen with 1280 x 720-pixel HD resolution, as well as a 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, a 2,140 mAh battery, an NFC chip and a 13-Megapixel camera for photos and video. For the moment, it seems to be running Android 4.0 ICS rather than 4.1 Jelly Bean.
Nothing appears to have leaked yet about the tablet or dock. It'll be interesting to see whether Asus sticks with the look of the first Transformer Pad or switches to something slimmer, more like the Transformer Pad Infinity TF700. Stay tuned—we'll find out in a few days' time.
