The research firm TechInsights has calculated the theoretical production cost of one iPhone 5 at $167.50 for the 16 GB version, and $132 for an iPhone 4S.

Each time it's the same thing. A new iPhone comes out and the analysts want to find out how much it costs to make. TechInsights has estimated that the latest incarnation costs $167.50, which is $35 more than the 4S. This figure is for the manufacturing of components only; R&D, logistics, marketing and assembly costs are not included.

So, which component costs the most? According to TechInsights it's the $28 A6 processor, which Apple describes as twice as fast the $21 A5 found in the 4S. And the display has gone up by $3.

Are these increased production costs the only explanation behind the iPhone 5's upped price ($50 more than the 4S upon its release)?
Difficult to say. TechInsights insists that this is only an estimate and that to find out the real cost of production they'd need to get their hands on one and strip it bare. To be continued...
