Apple's annual look back at its biggest apps, iTunes Rewind, covers the biggest iPhone downloads for 2011.  Camera app Instagram was the firm's favourite—and it's set to come to Android soon.

iTunes Rewind doesn't just cover the apps of the year—Apple also includes its favourite singles, albums, and e-books—but it's not a bestseller list, just a rundown of the firm's favourite content.

Apple has awarded first place this year to Instagram, a free app that allows users to take interesting photos that they can add a series of filters to before sharing them online over Facebook, Twitter or Flickr.

Now that smartphones have better and better digital cameras, users are more willing to take photos with their phones.  Apps that allow them to tweak their photos or share them with friends more easily—Instagram does both—have become a real hit.

Kevin Systrom, Instagram's CEO, recently revealed that an Android version of the app is coming soon, but didn't give a launch date.  His company as already managed to find its way onto 14 million iPhones around the world in just 14 months.
