Nokia Tablet Rumours Surface Once Again

Nokia could present a Windows RT tablet in Q1 2013

Rumours that Nokia could be working on a tablet first started doing the rounds back in March, but a new wave of whisperings has brought the Finnish firm's mysterious tablet back into the limelight. In fact, word is that Nokia's slate could be with us in Q1 2013 and it looks set to run on Windows RT.

So, those rumours about Nokia outing a 10.1" tablet are back again. Digitimes has apparently heard from "Taiwan-based supply chain makers" that Nokia is gearing up to launch into the tablet market with a Windows RT product. Indeed, while Nokia's efforts have previously been focused on launching its latest Lumia smartphone range, the firm is now free to embark on other major projects. And, like its range of Windows Phone 8 handsets, the Finnish phone-maker appears to have picked Qualcomm to provide CPU power for its upcoming tablet with the Snapdragon S4.

Since Microsoft's Surface RT has met with a somewhat lukewarm reception, Nokia is apparently playing a cautious hand with stock levels. Digitimes reports that the firm has only planned to build 200,000 units at first, so as to test the waters with its new tablet before making more as and when required.

In any case, Digitimes and several other sources point to an official presentation at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February 2013. As with its Lumia smartphones, Nokia again seems to have chosen Microsoft as its preferred partner. It'll be interesting to see what Nokia can bring to the Windows tablet, and whether the firm will succeed in making its tablet stand out enough from the Surface RT.
