Starting with the statistic that fifty million users mention Miramax films on their profiles, the American distributor has taken the opportunity of offering this community access to the most popular films in its catalogue (Kill Bill, Will Hunting, Pulp Fiction and so on). The application also offers games and free clips. The aim is to add to its numbers of Facebook friends and break the 150 million barrier in the next eighteen months. Ambitious!
Currently in beta version, the service gives you the opportunity of viewing films on a Google TV platform or on a computer or tablet. Films will cost 30 Facebook credits, which is the equivalent of just under £2, for 48 hours.
Miramax isn't the first to introduce a Facebook application. Warner Bros and Universal Pictures have also launched their applications.
For Facebook this is a nice way of adding value and making 'social viewing' content available on its network. For distributors, using new technologies (iPhone apps, social networks, YouTube and so on) as new distribution platforms is a way of benefiting from the effects of viral marketing.
