Million Dollar Guarantee for US Sony Customers

In the latest twist in the Sony PSN data theft affair, Howard Stringer, the firm's CEO, has made a direct apology to his customers and explained two new measures:

1. Sony will insure all any of its USA-based customers up the value of one million dollars if their identity is stolen after private details or credit card numbers were stolen from Sony's servers.

2. The cover lasts for one year.

Sony went on stress that similar coverage was being organised for other regions.  The firm's marketing department claims it is working hard at organising insurance for all of its customers, but says that it is hard to do with customers in so many different regions affected.  Sony is nevertheless pretty close to reaching an agreement.

Howard Stringer also brought up the fact that some customers had complained that Sony took a long time to make details of the attack public.  He defended the company's behaviour, saying it acted as quickly as it could to shut down compromised services.  The Sony CEO also reminded users that the company is facing a particularly challenging period, having dealt with an earthquake and tsunami in Japan a few months ago only to have to deal with a very 'human' attack on both it and its customers.

He concludes by reiterating the statement that Sony is hoping to get its networks back online 'in the coming days', but there are still no precise details.
