Microsoft Launching Rival to Apple's Magic Mouse?

Innovative as ever, Apple treated its faithful users to the Magic Mouse, a mouse with a large touch-sensitive zone and no scroll wheel. Now it seems Microsoft is perhaps preparing its own original navigation peripheral.

Microsoft insiders say the firm is building up to releasing a rival touch-sensitive mouse in September. After a few indiscreet comments (or blatant teases) from the manufacturer on Twitter, the new mystery product is said to be black, flat and 'touchy'. Bits of a cut up picture of the product were then tweeted, which, when stuck together, give the image you can see on the right here.

Other sources have also spotted a reseller product listing featuring a certain 'Arc Touch Mouse' due to sell for $70 when released this autumn.

Microsoft is probably hoping we'll get all excited about its new black, flat, touchy baby. There's not much chance of that from DigitalVersus though, as we were really disappointed with its design! Honestly, we were hoping it wouldn't be flat, like the picture seems to suggest, as flat mice are impractical to use and painful on the wrist if used for long periods of time. Plus, why bother ripping off Apple's design and just changing the colour to black when the firm already had a decent looking prototype?

We're hoping that the 'Arc Touch Mouse' isn't just a rumour, and that the leaked trackpad is just a distraction (or something else entirely). Why? Because the name 'Arc Touch Mouse' suggests a fold-out design, like Microsoft's current Arc Mouse. We've got our fingers crossed!
