According to Microsoft's blog, the 2012 CES will be the last time the firm has its own stand at the annual Las Vegas tech show.

CES 600X300

The CES has always been among the most eagerly awaited events in the tech calendar due to the high number of upcoming products unveiled and presented at the show.

As a major American tech company, Microsoft usually has a stand at the Las Vegas event, but while the firm still plans on keeping up its presence at the CES to meet customers and partners, as of next year, this will be done with no stand and no hyped-up product announcements or press events. However, Microsoft has not yet specified what form its 'presence' at the event will take.

Microsoft is apparently pulling out of the show due to timing. The CES is held in early January, which doesn't quite fit with the firm's product development and release timetable. Indeed, in a Microsoft blog post, Vice President of Corporate Communications, Franck X. Shaw, questions whether the firm should be 'doing something because it’s the right thing to do, or because it’s the way we’ve always done it'. In other words, it's not because Microsoft has always been present at the CES that it's the best strategy to pursue—especially if it doesn't fit with product release schedules or with customer needs.
