Burst Mode Test

The weak write speeds that this card produces hampered its performance in our burst mode test. Taking a burst of thirty photos, it clearly slowed down after the tenth, meaning it can't keep up with the three photos per second that our test camera can produce. Instead, the maximum speed is one photo every three seconds.

Transcend's collection of SDHC cards includes a 16 GB Class 6 option.  After being disappointed by the 8 GB version, we were eager to try its big brother, the 16 GB card.  The smaller card produced some very odd results: it was a winner during our reading tests, with excellent speeds.  For writing data, however, it was almost the very worst card in our selection.  Let's see if Transcend has managed to improve things at all ...

Write speeds still poor

This time around, the results were certainly more even, but that still wasn't enough to make up for the lost ground in writing.  We measured a speed of 7.6 MB/s when copying photos to the card; the best cards produce speeds in excess of 15 MB/s.  For reading files from the card, we found a read speed of 15.5 MB/s.  Overall, this 16 GB card is a little faster than the 8 GB, allowing to scrape into the mid-range of our table.

Struggles with burst mode on an SLR

The Transcend SDHC 16 GB Class 6 will be good enough for the majority of people with a compact digital camera. If, however, you like using burst mode on your SLR, you'll be better off with a faster card.
