The PNY Optima range of memory cards could alternatively be known as the 'strict minimum' range. Apart from an SD card adapter, there's absolutely nothing else supplied. Anyone looking for free content would be better off looking to PNY's Gameloft range of micro SDHC cards, which come with one of the developer's mobile phone games. That's a nice freebie for a card that's primarily designed for phones.

Today we're testing the PNY Optima 4 GB micro SDHC card, complete with SD adapter. This is a Class 4 memory card advertising write speeds of up to 8 MBps and read speeds of up to 16 MBps. Time to find out whether it lives up to expectations!

Low write speeds

When writing data, we measured a data transfer speed of 4.7 MBps, which means that the minimum Class 4 speed of 4 MBps minimum is respected. However, this write speed is clearly much lower than the speed announced in the manufacturer's tech specs. At 4.7 MBps, it'll take 14 minutes and 10 seconds to copy a 4 GB file to the card. You therefore can't be in too much of a rush with this memory card! On the other hand, we measured a good read speed of 18.9 MBps. That means it'll take 3 minutes and 30 seconds to unload the same file.

The PNY Optima micro SDHC range is primarily aimed at boosting the memory of a mobile phone. It's certainly fit for purpose, but you'll have to be patient when copying large files such as films.
