A smaller version of the MediaDisk ZX HD, the Memup MediaGate LNX HD is a nicely designed multimedia gateway. What are the differences between the two? Does the ZX HD stand up to the competition? Answers in our test!
The MediaGate LNX HD and MediaDisk ZX HD both use the same graphics interface. We're therefore not going to repeat what we've already said, but merely concentrate on what's different here.

First of all, the LNX HD doesn't have a digital TV tuner and there's no space for an internal hard drive. You therefore have to play content via the network (Ethernet 100 Mbps, Wi-Fi on option), USB or via the SDHC memory card reader. In any case, you'll have to avoid videos that are too heavy in terms of throughput.
When using the USB, there shouldn't be too many problems as the limit comes in at 34 Mbps (for H.264/MKV video). You do get videos with a higher Mbps but they're quite rare. In contrast, via the network you're limited to 28 Mbps and this will make more of a difference with 1080p videos tending to be jumpy.
Find all our readings in the media centre face-off
We think the design of this media centre is quite successful. The glossy black plastic allied with grey lining is quite nice. The remote looks more gadgety than Hi-Fi however, because of the cheap plastic it's made with. It handles fine though, and the buttons are well-placed. Note that the fan is rather noisy. During video playback, this isn't too much of a problem - except during silent scenes - but it's much more so when you're viewing photos.
The graphics interface, internet services and formats supported are identical on both the ZX HD and the LNX HD. We therefore refer you to the test for the Memup MediaDisk ZX HD for a more detailed analysis of the different points.
Pluses
-
Extensive multimedia compatibility
-
SDHC reader
-
DTS and Dolby Digital support
-
Nice size and design
Minuses
-
No advanced functions
-
Noisy fan
-
You can't display album covers and any TAGs apart from mp3
This media streamer gets a bit lost in the mass of models out there and only really stands out due to its nice design. Most multimedia files are accepted but you'll have to make sure the Mbps on 1080p videos isn't too high.
