While current consumer TVs may still only have Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels), the BBC's Director of London 2012 Olympic Games Coverage, Roger Mosey, has said that the BBC will be trying out 'Super-Hi Vision' 8K resolution (7680 x 4320 pixels) while filming the Games.

While some events will be filmed in 3D, other parts of the 2012 Olympics could be broadcast in 8K resolution—that's 32 million pixels per image compared with 2 million for HD. Although TVs and projectors able to display such resolutions won't be on the market before 2020, giant 8K-compatible screens, also known as 'Super Hi-Vision' screens, will be temporarily erected in several public places in London and in other cities around the UK.

Plus, as with the world cup, eager viewers will be able to view the action in cinemas equipped with 8K or 4K (4096 x 2160 pixels) projection systems.

This will, however, be a limited trial. Implementing the project will be no mean feat for the Corporation, and will probably limit 8K broadcasting to a few specific events, such as the opening ceremony.
