The test

The test is quite basic and consists in timeing how long the different systems take at start-up. We start timing when the load bar is displayed (after the BIOS) and stop when Internet Explorer opens. We place IE in the list of software that executes at start-up.

On our entry level PC, things are pretty catastrophic for Windows 7 (10 seconds down on the others). What is surprising is that Windows Vista is as fast as XP.

Scores are radically different with the 64-bit systems. Microsoft has obviously taken some care with the 64-bit version of Seven, which as you can see loads faster than the other two. Vista is some way back and like XP, is slower than on the less powerful machine.
