LG Protoype TVs just 6 mm thick

6 mm is something to smile about for LG

Koren manufacturer LG has just unveiled two televisions that are a mere 6 mm thick--that's less than a quarter of an inch!

Its new 42'' and 47'' models have set the new record for thin LCD TVs.  The Sony XEL-1, at just 3 mm, isn't a fair comparison as it's not only a pre-production OLED screen, but is also only 11'' across.

Naturally enough, screens that aren't very thick aren't very heavy, either.  Weighing in at 6 kg and 7 kg respectively for the two different versions, these new TVs are very easy to transport and will hang easily on just about any wall.

The electrical consumption should also be a lot lower than on equivalent models relying on neon tubes.  It's worth pointing out, though, that these are edge-lit LED screens, which has contributed to these reduced dimensions.

Of course, they include all the features we'd expect from a brand-new TV, including a Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution screen, an 8 ms response time and a built-in digital tuner.

These prototypes aren't yet available in the shops, and a release date has not been announce--and neither has a launch price ...
