LG Developing New Touchscreen Tablet

After the Fusion Garage JooJoo and the Dell Streak, LG has now announced it's working to develop an Android-based tablet. It looks like competition could be hotting up for the iPad!

While Apple's iPad is still riding high on a wave of commercial success, rival products like the Fusion Garage JooJoo haven't really been able to compete. Some manufacturers, like HP and Microsoft, seem to have given up even trying, either delaying or totally cancelling their touchscreen tablet prototypes. Dell, however, does seem to have succeeded where others have failed, with the Streak smartphone-turned-touchscreen-tablet, which actually comes off pretty well in online reviews. Dell's Streak has a 5-inch capacitive multipoint touchscreen, Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity, and runs on Android (1.6 with 2.2 Froyo update coming this summer). The Streak was released in the UK back in June and is available on the O₂ network.


Another competitor could soon be joining the race for touchscreen tablet glory, as LG has now announced it's working on a tablet based on Google's Android mobile operating system. As yet, the manufacturer hasn't released any information on the device's name or price, but, according to the Wall Street Journal, it's slated for release at the end of the year. The next official announcement should come from HP, as the company is said to be thinking of relaunching its Slate project under a different name (Hurricane, perhaps?) and running Palm's WebOS.
