LG buys out Kodak's OLED production

LG is preparing to make to buy the arm of Kodak that produces OLED displays.

The financial aspect of the deal is as yet unknown, but what is clear is that it will partly resolve a legal dispute between the two firms.

More generally, though, we hope that the deal will allow LG to ramp up production of OLED TVs.  Of all of the prototypes and tests of new technology that we've seen in the past few years, it's OLED that has been the most promising, bringing together the advantages of several competing systems in a single product, without the problems faced by either plasma or LCD TVs.  Blacks look deep and realistic, the viewing angles are very wide, the panel itself is very then and energy consumption is reduced.

But don't start dreaming of your first OLED TV just yet--it'll be a few years yet before large, affordable models become available.  Between now and then, both LCD and plasma have got a long life ahead of them, and the arrival of 3D has promised to breathe new life into a sector which has yet to show any signs of slowing down.
