It's official—LG has announced the upcoming launch of a 55-inch OLED TV in 2012.

At the moment, even small OLED TVs are still way too expensive. LG's 15-inch model, for example, sells for the best part of £1,000, while a 17-inch Sony OLED has a rather impressive price tag of $4,900 (approx. £3,000). However, at the beginning of the year, LG inaugurated its '8th generation' factory, which can produce large OLED panels in greater quantities. The manufacturer therefore intends on driving down the price of its OLED TVs to make them competitive with LCD models.

The good news is that LG recently announced that its first 55-inch OLED TV would be ready to go on sale in 2012 instead of 2013 as initially expected. The launch price, however, has not yet been announced.
