After the Fun, here’s the Smart!

On their last generation of screens LG re-introduced the “Fun” button with several options. This was more of a gadget than a true innovation. The new generation has the “Smart” button and options that put the accent on the useful and practical, such as the time command function. This is a sort of alarm call that sounds in case you lose all notion of time as often happens when you’re lost in a game. There’s also a feature that works as a sensor of ambient brightness to adapt the screen’s luminosity.

The cinema mode option is not really what you might expect. It doesn’t improve the image quality of the videos you watch. When streaming video, the feature makes everything around your video grey, so that your attention isn’t attracted away from it. When you’re in full screen this function has no further purpose but some videos are still very badly rendered.

The W2253V is a 2ms 22 inch full HD with a glossy black bezel underlined with a transparent band. The resemblance with Samsung’s T series is pretty flagrant. LG has gone for the standard 3 connectors, VGA, DVI and HDMI. On the audio side there aren’t any speakers but a headphone socket that allows you to pick up sound from the HDMI in, useful if you’re counting on connecting it to a recent generation consol.

The buttons that give access to the OSD are sensitive and only light up when your finger gets close to them. The biggest problem with the W2253V in terms of the design and build is the base: no movement apart from a slight inclination of the panel.

Gaming

The 2 ms announced is accurate. So you wont get any blurring during fast movement. Whether doing your accounts or playing a devilishly difficult stage of your favourite game, the W2253V will stand up to your needs. If you’re playing online, you won’t experience any display delay problems. Display delay being under 1 image (too small to make any difference), you’d have to be in pretty bad faith to blame it for a defeat.

Colours

Visually the default colour settings are pretty good. Not all screens have a deltaE of under 2.0. For those who need reminding, the deltaE is the average difference between colours requested by the graphics card and those displayed by the screen. When the deltaE is under 3, the unexercised eye won’t pick up any problems. Now we’ve covered our catch-up lesson, lets get back to the screen! Although very good, this one is not perfect. It suffers especially from problems in terms of brightness of greys that also display dominant blues. Various attempts to right this in the OSD didn’t improve things. Use the calibration profile option available here
Colours good then but the same can't be said for the contrast. With a ratio around 680: 1, it is below the average of 750: 1. A shame as with a better contrast ratio, the screen would have scored 5 stars here.

Films

Unfortunately, LG, like other manufacturers, still hasn’t decided to invest in an image processing circuit worthy of the name. The result is the usual flickering and mediocre upscaling. Screens still have a long way to go before they catch up with TVs.

If what it lacks in design and build is not a problem for you, this screen has a lot to keep you happy.
