Unsurprisingly, the B2274HDS struggles when it has to upscale SD sources. We recommend you leave the job either to specialist software like VLC or Media Player Classic, or else use an external device like your DVD player or a games console. That way, the monitor will receive a 1080p signal directly and won't need to do any work itself.

If you can't do that, and want to cut down on the snowstorm effect, we suggest you reset the monitor to its factory settings and then turn the brightness down as far as you can get it.

We found that to be the secret to enjoying watching films on this monitor.

Iiyama is back in our lab this week with its new ProLite B2274HDS monitor, a 22'' Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixel) display which is backlit using LEDs.  On paper at least, the B2274HDS should combine a fast response time, a very handy stand and a strong contrast ratio—all without breaking the bank.

Design: a big stand—but very handy

In the past, Iiyama monitors with a model number starting with a 'B', like the B2409HDS or the B2403WS for instance, have come with a very flexible stand and this latest option is no exception.  The B2274HDS might not sit on the most attractive base, but it does allow users to adjust the height of the display and rotate it to portrait orientation if they prefer.  That means the user can get in the perfect position, whether they're using it for business or pleasure.  The usual trio of inputs—VGA, DVI and HDMI—is provided, along with a line out for audio and a pair of 2 x 1 W speakers.

Colours: accurate reproduction by default—and it gets better

We're happy to report that the B2274HDS reproduces colours accurately straight out of the box, with an average deltaE of 2.7.  If you want to do even better than that, you can switch to sRGB mode whether the deltaE falls again to just 2.3.  If having accurate colour reproduction is important for you, then this monitor is definitely worth considering.

The contrast is less impressive, however.  The contrast ratio struggles to climb above 740:1, well below our average figure of 850:1.  Overall, it's somewhat disappointing, and what keeps this monitor from earning five stars in this section.

Responsiveness: ready for gaming—once you've set it up

By default, the B2274HDS is set up as a standard TN monitor with a 5 ms response time.  You need to use the onscreen menus to turn the response time down to the value of 2 ms quoted in the spec by activating the Overdrive feature.  It seems that Iiyama has listened to what we've said about some its earlier monitors, and now offers five different overdrive levels, rather than the choice of simply turning it on or off.  That bodes well because it should mean that users can gradually increase the responsiveness until reverse ghosting becomes visible.

That's all well and good in theory, but we couldn't find any real difference between the five different levels.  The first level reduced the ghosting time from the default value of 20 ms to just 8 ms, an excellent performance that beats many of Iiyama's rivals.  The next four levels, though, couldn't improve on that and the ghosting time didn't get any better.  That said, the B2274HDS is perfectly capable of displaying fast-moving objects smoothly and so won't disappoint avid gamers.

This graph shows the ghosting time, measured in ms, that the monitor takes to entirely remove the previous frame. The shorter the time, the more fluid moving images will appear

The input lag is pretty normal.  By that we mean it's there, but at just 16 ms is insignificant enough to be visible to the naked eye so it won't hold you back when you're enjoying a multiplayer game.

Pluses

-

Accurate colour reproduction: average deltaE of 2.3

-

Usability: great stand

-

Good for gaming thanks to a low response time

Minuses

-

Below average contrast

-

TN panel, so poor vertical viewing angles

With wider viewing angles and a better contrast ratio, the Iiyama ProLite B2274HDS could have been a five-star monitor. Nevertheless, it's a very user-friendly display, with accurate colour reproduction and great response times. That should be enough to convince plenty of you to try it out.
