Dell recently updated its S-series monitors, and we're only too pleased to see that these displays (with models from 22" to 27") have all ditched TN LCD technology in favour of IPS or VA screens.
Dell's S series now includes a 27" Full HD monitor with a (glossy) IPS screen, a two-port USB hub, as well as VGA, DVI and HDMI entries. Like other IPS-based S-series monitors, the S2740L has an advertised response time of 7 ms and contrast quoted at 1000:1. Note that the 27" monitor may take a little longer to find its way into the shops than the 22", 23" and 24" models below.
The 22" and 23" S-series monitors (S2240L and S2340L) have the same basic tech specs but lose the USB hub and the DVI entry. Both models are already available to buy in Dell's online store.
Dell hasn't had to worry about sourcing a 24" IPS screen panel, however, as the S2440L uses a VA panel. Like IPS, this technology has wider viewing angles than TN and generally offers higher contrast (5000:1 announced here). Video connections are the same as the S2240L and S2340L, with VGA and HDMI entries. Plus, like other models in this updated S series, the screen and bezel have an edge-to-edge glass finish, which makes for a glossy overall look (reflections ahoy!).
The fact that Dell has cut TN technology out of its mid-range monitors proves that there are viable and affordable alternatives to TN out there. This is a change of direction we're stating to see from many manufacturers, and for which we can largely thank LG. Two years ago, the South Korean manufacturer was the first to out a range of relatively affordable consumer-level monitors with IPS screens.
