During this morose period for netbooks, struggling against the tide of tablets and ultrabooks, Dell is the second major manufacturer to abandon the netbook market.

At the beginning of December, Samsung announced its decision to quit netbook production, a market that has been out of sorts for some time. What with tablets eating up chunks of market share and ultrabooks emerging as the new reference on the laptop market, the netbook isn't getting the attention it used to.

Dell has now also decided to quit, telling The Verge that it was abandoning the market. In passsing however Dell did mention that its hybrid model, the Inspiron Duo, half-tablet, half-netbook, was selling very well and will survive the decision.

Dell's marketing director, Alison Gardner told The Verge that Dell's marketing strategy was now to prioritise slimmer, more powerful computers (so as to be able to increase the sales price).

While many thought that the tablet would be the end of the netbook, it looks as if the ultrabook is what will finish it off.
