Intel has announced it'll be investing $300 million in rapidly improving ultrabooks, the sleek, slim, powerful laptops that Intel (and us) consider to be highly promising products in a somewhat static laptop market.

Slimmer, cheaper, more powerful!

Ahead of CES 2012, which opens today, Intel presented an ultrabook running on a new-generation 2 GHz Ivy Bridge processor (rather than a current Sandy Bridge CPU). This new ultrabook was super-slim too, with the thickest part of the notebook measuring just 18 mm with the hood closed!

This new-gen ultrabook also has NFC technology for contactless payment. Apparently, all you have to do is tap a compatible phone or credit card on the laptop to pay for something online.

The graphics were pretty impressive too, and the DirectX 11 demo gave smooth, crisp onscreen images that were pleasant to watch.

Plus, it seems that Intel has got a whole load of manufacturers on board, from Lenovo and Acer to LG!
